Renting an RV for the first time can feel overwhelming โ but it doesn't have to be. Here's everything you need to know to have an amazing first RV experience in Texas.
So you've decided to try RV camping for the first time โ welcome to one of the best decisions you'll ever make for your family vacations. RV camping combines the freedom of the open road with the comfort of home, and in Texas, there's no better way to experience the Hill Country, the Guadalupe River, and the wide-open spaces that make this state so special.
But if you've never rented an RV before, the process can feel a little intimidating. What size do you need? What's included? Do you need special insurance? Can you really tow it yourself? We've answered all of these questions and more in this complete first-timer's guide.
Step 1: Choose the Right Type of RV
The first decision is choosing the right type of RV for your trip. Here's a quick breakdown of the main types we offer:
- Travel Trailers: The most popular choice for first-timers. These are towed behind your truck or SUV and range from compact 20-foot units to large 36-foot bunkhouse models. They're easy to use and our most affordable option, starting at $85/night.
- Fifth-Wheels: Larger and more luxurious than travel trailers, fifth-wheels require a pickup truck with a special hitch. They offer more living space and are great for longer trips or larger families.
- Class B (Van Campers): Compact, self-contained camper vans. Great for couples or small families who want flexibility and easy parking.
- Class C Motorhomes: Larger motorhomes that you drive rather than tow. More space than a Class B, with a cab-over sleeping area.
For most first-time renters with a family, we recommend a travel trailer in the 29โ34 foot range. They sleep 6โ8 people comfortably, are easy to tow with most trucks and large SUVs, and are the most cost-effective option.
Step 2: Know What's Included
All of our RVs come fully stocked and ready to use. Here's what you can expect to find when you arrive:
- Full kitchen with stove, oven, microwave, refrigerator, and all cookware and utensils
- Bedding, pillows, and towels for all sleeping areas
- Air conditioning and heating
- Outdoor awning with outdoor furniture
- Bathroom with shower, toilet, and sink
- TV and entertainment system
- All necessary hookup equipment (power cord, water hose, sewer hose)
You just need to bring your food, personal items, and anything specific to your activities (fishing gear, river tubes, etc.). We take care of everything else.
Step 3: Decide Between Delivery and Self-Tow
One of the biggest decisions for first-time renters is whether to have us deliver the RV or tow it yourself. Here's how to decide:
- Choose Delivery if: You don't have a truck or SUV with towing capacity, you're nervous about towing, or you want the most stress-free experience possible. We deliver, set up, level, and connect everything โ you just show up.
- Choose Self-Tow if: You have a truck or large SUV with adequate towing capacity (check your vehicle's tow rating), you want the flexibility to move the RV during your trip, or you want to save on delivery fees.
Step 4: Book Your Campsite
Before you finalize your RV rental, make sure you have a campsite reserved. For River Road campgrounds in New Braunfels, popular sites book up weeks or even months in advance for summer weekends. We recommend booking your campsite first, then reserving your RV for the same dates.
Our most popular delivery locations include Camp Huaco Springs, Mystic Quarry, Camp Fimfo, and various River Road campgrounds. We also deliver to private properties, so if you have land or a friend with property, we can set up there too.
Step 5: What to Bring
- Food and beverages for your entire stay
- Personal toiletries and medications
- Sunscreen and bug spray (essential for Texas summers)
- River gear: tubes, water shoes, dry bags, life jackets for kids
- Outdoor games and activities
- Firewood (or plan to purchase at the campground)
- Trash bags โ leave your site clean
- Phone chargers and portable battery packs
Frequently Asked Questions from First-Timers
Do I need a special driver's license to tow an RV?
In Texas, a standard driver's license is sufficient to tow most travel trailers and fifth-wheels under 26,000 lbs GVWR. You do not need a commercial driver's license for recreational towing.
